Oil City Area High School, located on 10 Lynch Boulevard, first opened its doors in 1966. The building underwent a significant renovation in 2010, modernizing facilities to better serve students from grades 9–12 .
Oil City itself holds historical significance as the birthplace of the modern petroleum industry. The wealth and growth from the oil boom in the late 19th and early 20th centuries influenced the development of the city’s infrastructure, including its educational institutions.
Over the years, Oil City Area High School has evolved to offer a comprehensive curriculum that balances academics, career and technical education, and extracurricular activities, including successful athletic programs under the "Oilers" nickname. The school emphasizes preparing students for both higher education and the workforce, reflecting the region’s strong ties to industry and community development.
